Gordon Simpson - Pivotal promoter
of Western Arrarnta (Hermannsburg) Art
Elder Fine Art Auctions are pleased to be offering a selection of works from Gordon Simpsons personal Collection.
From 1939, Gordon Simpson was stationed at Alice Springs NT as a Supervising Technician for the former Postmaster - General's Department (Australia Post). While there, he fell in love with the light-filled colours and hues that were being depicted
in the landscape paintings of the local Arrarnta artists - the most well-known artist being Albert Namatjira.
With the beautifully diverse land spreading north from Oodnadatta to Barrow Creek and the MacDonnell Ranges, this unique land is known for the beauty of ever-changing colours of mountain-sides and shadowed gorges featuring purples, pinks, blues, reds and the golden shades of dry spinifex. Many artists have been challenged by depicting these mercurial shades, but the local Aboriginal artists from the Hermannsburg School (formerly artists associated with the Arunta Arts Council as it was known) have such a creative bond and spirituality with this country that is integral to capturing the light-play of their country in their paintings. Gordon Simpson bought an early watercolour by Walter Ebatarinja and subsequent paintings from Albert Namitjira and his five sons and other relatives. Rex Battarbee - considered one of Australia's best colourists - generously taught Albert Namitjira to paint Gordon Simpson with Namatjira watercolour watercolours in the "white man's" way instead of the traditiona...
l painting techniques (bark and cave paintings) of his ancestors. Albert subsequently taught his five sons and other relatives to paint watercolours and Rex Battarbee encouraged them to experiment with techniques to develop their own style.
The Arunta Arts Council was formed to promote the work of these burgeoning artists, and as a member of the Council for two years, Gordon Simpson was generous with his time and expertise to promote the area's watercolour paintings around South Australia and Victoria at public exhibitions in schools, churches, the GPO Adelaide, Adelaide University, Melbourne and Mildura to name just a few venues. Without this pivotal promotion at a time when the Hermannsburg style of painting was just beginning, the artistry of the local painters would not have been brought to light and embraced by art lovers everywhere.
So what started with Rex Battarbee hiring a younger Albert Namitjira as his camel boy and guide to explore and paint the MacDonnell Ranges and then offering to show Albert how to paint a watercolour, came a movement of painters known as the Hermannsburg School of Aboriginal artists.
